Sports Leave

Amount of credit

Class 1: will be considered for part of the time required to travel and participate. Where criteria below is met, sports leave may be granted up to and including the 3rd day per event. Where the event is longer than 3 days sports leave may be allocated on a 3 days sports leave to 1 day contributed by the police officer/staff. Please refer to Appendix B for how to apply 3:1 ratio examples.

Class 2: for league fixtures and PSUK eliminating events hours allowed per fixture varies depending on the sport. Please refer to Appendix A of the Schedule of Levels of Participation.

Class 3: District Commanders/Nominated Individuals may approve inter-departmental or inter-district events from the sports listed in Appendix A.

Sports Day: Police officers/staff participating for their District in a Sports Day/Governors Trophy event may be granted a maximum of 8 hours sports credit. 

Professional Sport: this is classified as sport for which you receive payment for your participation. Participants must decide to either receive payment and be awarded sports credit without pay or decline payment and be awarded sports credit with pay. Please refer to Service Procedure No 11/04 for guidance.

Class 1

Official competitive events at the highest level, junior and senior, and is limited to:

1. International Events - representing either PSNI or country
2. Inter-provincial Events - representing either PSNI or country
3. International Police Events - representing PSNI or province
4. British or Irish Championship Events - representing PSNI or country
5. PSNI Teams in Police Sport United Kingdom (PSUK) Championship Events

Please note police officers and police staff must include their selection notification with applications made under those events listed above.

Sporting events that do not have official status are not included ie ad hoc or friendly events organised without approval of official bodies such as the Athletic Association (AA) and/or PSUK do not qualify as Class events for sports credits.

Class 2

This refers to:

1. PSNI representative teams competing in local weekly leagues and cup competitions/fixutres organised under a properly constitued ruling body of sport.

2. AA eliminating events for PSUK Championships.

Class 3

This refers to:

1. In-service events organised by sections affiliated to and approved by the AA and controlled by the organising committees of departmental, command or district recreation clubs.

2. District teams competing in the annual PSNI sports day related events organised by the AA, which are allocated points towards the Governor's Trophy, although they may not be held on the same day as the actual sports day event.
