POLICE SERVICE OF NORTHERN IRELAND LADIES CHOIR

PSNI Ladies Choir
The ladies choir was formed in September 1976 and for 26 years were known as the Royal Ulster Constabulary Ladies Choir. We adopted our new name in 2002 in line with the changes in policing in Northern Ireland. Our motto of ‘Singing for Pleasure’ has remained.

Throughout the years we have travelled the length and breadth of the country, accepting engagements from church groups, cross community groups, and local charities to help with their fund raising activities. We have successfully competed in Music Festivals in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, and have performed to audiences in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. The choir recently celebrated its 30 th anniversary year with a very enjoyable trip to the Festpol in Prague where we had the opportunity to sing with choirs from many countries and take in the wonderful sights of the city.

The choir is open to all serving female officers (full time and part time) past and present, to all female civilian support staff and to all female relatives i.e. mothers, wives and daughters of serving and past officers.

The choir practices every Monday evening in St Dorothea’s Parish Church, Gilnahirk, Belfast, and usually fulfils a minimum of two engagements per month between September and June. Yvette Anderson, our conductor, has been with us for many years and she is responsible for choosing the music we sing and how we sing it. Julie McClelland our pianist is a well respected member of the team and quietly works away in the background keeping us in tune.

It is with great regret that Julie will be leaving us this year as it is proving difficult to juggle work, home life and the choir travelling from Ballymoney. The choir is presently seeking a new accompanist so if you are aware of anyone who would be interested and/or require further information please contact Pat Montgomery (Hon. Secretary) at p_j_montgomery@hotmail.com or 02890791007.

Tours and Trips - throughout the year individual members of the Club organise trips for Club members which can be anything from a ride-and-meet-for-lunch to a continental tour.  Recent successful trips have included a four day tour of north-west Scotland; two overnight tours to the west of Ireland; a 9 day trip to Germany and France including a visit to the Nurburgring, Le Mans circuit and Normandy beaches, and a number of trips to spectate at motorcycle sporting events.  We are always glad to see new members with new ideas!

FBPMC National Motorcycle Trek Series - running since 1986, this competitive series for both teams and individuals has evolved over the years into something resembling a navigation challenge blended with a treasure hunt.  It has become a tradition that we host the opening leg of the four events in the annual series in April each year.  The ‘NITREK’ as it is now known has become a firm favourite amongst our colleagues from Great Britain and is consistently the best attended of the four legs in the annual series.  Up to 90 motorcyclists, many bringing their ‘favourite pillion’ descend on our base hotel from all around the UK and Ireland for a fun packed weekend of competition with a healthy social aspect.  The idea is to devise a challenging light-hearted competition, whilst introducing a visitor to Northern Ireland to some of the great biking roads and scenery we have on our doorstep.  In turn, many of our members travel to different areas of Great Britain each year to compete in the other three legs organised by various Police motor clubs. Not without success either, as many honours have been brought back to Northern Ireland over the years.

Rider Improvement - the Club encourages members to take an interest in improving their own riding skills and promotes the activities of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).  Some of our members are directly involved with these organisations as ‘Senior Observers’/Examiners.

Meetings - the Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 8.00pm. (a new venue is currently under discussion)

Points of Contact - The club is keen to hear from anyone interested in new membership and also previous club members who have ‘drifted away’. Why not come along to one of our meetings and find out more?  You are assured of a warm welcome. For further information contact any of the following:

Rambling/Hill Walking

Mont Blanc
The Plodders Rambling Club became affiliated to the RUC AA in January 2007 although it has been in existence for approximately 10 years. We are a group of individuals who meet two or three times every month to walk in areas including the Mournes, Antrim Hills, Donegal and Rathlin. Our walks can range from 5-6 hour walks in the shorter winter months to 7-8 hour walks in the summer months. We also organise trips away twice a year, usually May and September, to places such as the Lake District, Snowdownia, Scottish Highlands and Kerry. These usually include at least 3 days of intensive walking. We have also completed an 18-day trek of the Everest High Passes in 2006 and it is our intention to carry out an ascent of Mont Blanc in 2008. We cater for all abilities and standards throughout our annual programme although it should be stated that some of the walks do require a good all round level of fitness.

Although this is a strong club we are always keen to encourage and welcome new members.

Details of the walks or copies of the programme can be obtained by contacting the following through the internal email system or at the extensions listed.
